‘All the beauty of life is made up of light and shadow’ Leo Tolstoy
Light and sound are the sources of energy reverberated by us in our everyday life. Little did we know about the real impact of these sources of energy till our Grade 3 learners ventured into a deep inquiry on the impact of light and sound by creating dramatic effects to capture an audience. The virtual showcase of learning was spread over two days- 16th & 17th December 2020.
The learners began their inquiry journey on the unit of Light and Sound by becoming young scientists. They identified problem statements, formed hypothesis, conducted experiments and finally arrived at meaningful and concrete conclusions. Through these experiments, the learners developed scientific attributes which supported them in comprehending the properties of both light and sound. They were able to infer that sounds travel as vibrations, it needs mediums to travel, it cannot travel in a vacuum and that echo is also a rational phenomenon. They further expanded their research by identifying the marvels behind refraction and reflection- properties of light and that light travels in a straight line and when blocked creates a shadow.
Intrigued by the story- ‘Rumpelstiltskin’, our learners collated their experiential findings, then put on their writers’ hat and added some of their scenes & details into the original story and scripted the play, titled- ‘The Mysterious Little Man’, themed around the central idea of their unit- ‘Light and sound are used to create a dramatic effect to capture an audience’, and showcased their learning. The digital medium provided the learners with unlimited ideas and techniques to create dramatic effects on echo, vibrations, shadow and reflections. The enthusiastic learners applied their learning and created background sound effects, shadow theatre scenes and cast theatre light effects in their fairy tale drama to capture the essence of the script and the characters.
The entire show was sculptured by our Grade 3 learners. With scenic virtual backgrounds, the narrators kept the audiences hooked throughout the play. Sounds to express joy, horror, anger and sorrow were composed by the learners using the online tool, Band Lab, resonated throughout the show. It was an enchanting experience for the audiences to be transported back into a fairy tale land and witness a spectacle of lights and sound effects plaited intricately as pieces of evidence of learning of our talented learners.
